Solid Waste Equipment Operator I/II
 

THE SALARY: I: $2,734 - $3,323/mo. II: 2,944 - 3,579/mo.
plus excellent benefits, including PERS (2.7% @ 55) retirement.

THE POSITION: Under general supervision, operates a variety of refuse collection vehicles and equipment involved in the pick up, transport and disposal of residential, industrial and commercial waste and recycled materials; learns and demonstrates a full understanding of all applicable policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties; performs other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience/Education: Any combination of education and experience that has provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for a Solid Waste Equipment Operator I/II. A typical way of obtaining the required qualifications is to possess the equivalent of:
Level I: Previous experience in the operation of large trucks or equipment, certification on three types of vehicles used in the City’s solid waste collection program, and a high school diploma or equivalent.
Level II: In addition to the above, one years experience in the operation of large trucks or equipment, and certification on five types of vehicles used in the City’s solid waste collection program, and a high school diploma or equivalent.
Special Requirements: Possession of a minimum of a valid Class B rating California commercial driver’s license w/ Air Brake Endorsement and satisfactory driving record.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of operational and maintenance characteristics of refuse/recycling vehicles, loaders and other standard equipment; traffic laws, rules and regulations involved in the operations of heavy equipment; defensive driving; proper lifting procedures; City street system; basic principles of record keeping; occupational hazards and standard safety practices. Skill to safely and effectively operate and maintain a variety of equipment, tools and vehicles used in solid waste and recycle collection activities. Ability to operate a variety of heavy equipment, such as front loaders, roll-off container trucks, side loaders, recycle trucks, sweepers and other equipment in a variety of traffic conditions; handle and solve mechanical problems; properly clean and maintain assigned equipment; interpret, apply and explain applicable laws, codes and regulations; perform heavy physical labor for extended periods of time; work independently; respond to issues and concerns from the community; maintain appropriate California drivers license; demonstrate good customer service; follow written and oral directions; observe safety principles and work in a safe manner; read and understand street maps; be available to begin work at 4 AM; work weekends, overtime and holidays as required; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships.

SPECIAL NOTICE: This position is covered by Agency Shop provisions. Therefore, pursuant to Government Code Section 3502.5(b), and the Agency Shop Agreement, employees must either join the Union, pay to the Union a service fee in lieu thereof, or establish a religious exemptions therefrom.

SELECTION PROCESS: Following review of Applications, those candidates whose qualifications best meet the City's needs will be invited to participate in the selection process which may include one or more of the following elements: Administrative review of qualifications, Supplemental Questionnaire, oral board appraisal, and skills testing. Successful candidates will be placed on an eligibility list for one year. Final selection will be subject to a satisfactory background investigation, including a fingerprint check and a pre-employment physical examination, conducted by the City Physician, which includes drug/alcohol screening. Any job offer is conditioned upon producing valid original documents that demonstrate an employee’s identity and eligibility to work in the United States. As part of the background investigation, a current copy of the candidate’s driving record, which can be obtained from the Department of Motor Vehicles, will be required.
