Requesting Public Records
Public Records Requests
The City of Hemet encourages public participation in the governing process and provides reasonable accessibility to all public records except those documents exempt from disclosure by express provisions of law or considered confidential or privileged under law.

The City, in accordance with Government Code Section 6253, has ten (10) days to respond to any request for public documents by indicating the availability of records.  Actual production of the documents may take somewhat longer depending upon their ease of availability and staff workload. 

General Guidelines
  • The City can only produce documents that are in its possession, custody or control.
  • The City is not required to compile unrecorded or unsorted information, do calculations or perform special research or analysis in response to public records requests or questions from the public.
  • The City is not required to provide copies of records that have not been retained in the normal course of business or that have been destroyed under its Document Retention Policy.


Duplication of Records
The City charges the reasonable direct cost of $0.25 for each "8 1/2 by 11" size copy for the first copy and $0.10 for each additional "8 1/2 by 11" size copy thereafter. If the request is for reproduction of oversize or color documents, or reproduction of maps, photographs, an additional charge to cover the reasonable cost of such reproduction will be determined based on the City's direct cost of reproduction. The City does not charge for staff time involved in searching for, or assembling responsive records, preparing written responses, or assisting members of the public.
