An Open Letter to the Public on Library Service Reductions
February 11, 2009
Dear Library Patron,
2009 marks a difficult economic time for our nation and community. We recognize that library use continues to rise as more and more in our community rely on library service. However, due to many
economic factors and declining City revenue, our already challenging deficit presents us with the need to make tough decisions in order to balance our budget. This trend is expected to continue for some time.
Consequently, on December 28th, 2008 the Hemet City Council implemented many necessary
reductions–including library service to lower expenditures. As a result, the Library needed to reduce costs this year by nearly $300,000. This reduction follows one of nearly $200,000 last year. In response, the library has needed to lay off personnel, cut book and DVD purchases, and reduce facility costs.
Our staff will do all we can to continue to provide our community with the library service it has come to expect. However, due to these drastic economic measures, there will be challenges. We plan to use our remaining personnel and resources in new ways. Here are some changes you will see:

- Our public service hours will go from 44 hours per week to 38 hours per week. Beginning the
first week in March, 2009, the Library will be closed Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. Our new open hours will be Wednesday 9am to 7pm, Thursday 9am to 7pm, Friday 9am to 6pm, and Saturday 9am to 6pm.

- During certain hours, some Public Desk coverage has moved from double staffing to single
staffing, with an anticipated increase in queuing for the public.

- During certain hours, we will implement a “Joint Service Desk” near the front of the library–
combining Reference/Information with Checkout Desk for greater efficiency.

The library budget to purchase books and other material is about 35% lower than in previous
years. While we hope to supplement our ability to purchase bestsellers and DVD’s with funds
from our Library Foundation and Library Friends support groups, there still may be a noticeable
drop in the new materials we are able to provide.

If you have suggestions for changes in service or concerns about changes, please feel free to contact me
or leave a suggestion in one of our suggestion boxes. Rest assured that I and the library staff have
pledged to provide excellent customer service even during this difficult time. I personally appreciate the
community’s support of the Library during this year and the years to come. Your support of the Hemet
Public Library will continue to enhance our collections and services.
