HEMET was founded in 1887 and incorporated on January 20, 1910 with 992 people.  Hemet has 25.97 square miles and is a mean elevation of 1,599 feet.  The highest point in Hemet is 2,052 feet above sea level.  The City's latitude is 33:44:50.464N and longitude is 116:58:4.339W.

HEMET is a Council/Manager form of government with seven elected positions, five Council Members, one City Treasurer and one City Clerk.  The Mayor is elected by the Council Members and serves a one-year term.  All Council Members serve a four-year term.

The 2004-2005 operating budget plan for Hemet totals $59,692,2240.  The City has a Redevelopment Agency with eight redevelopment project areas.  The City operates it's own police and fire departments.

Population:  As of January 2005, the City of Hemet had a population of 66,455, according to the California Department of Finance.  The median age for Hemet is 41 years and has been dropping since 1980 when it was 64.2 years.  The drop in median age is due in large part to the construction of new, entry-level homes and their sale to young families.

Schools:  There are two school districts which serve Hemet and the greater Hemet area.  They are the Hemet Unified School District (HUSD), serving all but a small portion of the City and San Jacinto Unified School District (SJUSD).  HUSD provides education for kindergarten through 12th grade and is the predominate district in the City.  For more information regarding schools, please contact HUSD at 951-765-5100 or SJUSD at (951) 951-929-7700

Housing:   The City of Hemet had a total of 32,452 housing units as of January 2005.  Almost 1/3 of the dwelling units are mobile homes, most within mobilehome parks.  There are 8,823 senior restricted mobile homes in parks within the City.  The median sales price of existing single-family homes is $184.425.  Rentals for one and two bedroom apartments are approximately $450- $795 per month.  Rentals for three and four bedroom houses range from $795 to $1295 per month.

Economics:  The largest employers in the Hemet/San Jacinto Valley are the public sector. The Hemet Valley Hospital District is the largest employer followed by the Hemet Unified School District.  The four largest private employers are Hilton Reservations, Deutsch Engineering, Verizon California and Home Depot.
