On 11-10-09 at 1631 hours, Hemet Police Department Officers responded to a reported burglary in the 500 block of Shasta Wy in the City of Hemet. The 89 year old victim reported on 11-10-09 at approximately 1530 hours, a white male adult knocked on his door. The victim answered the door and the suspect said he worked for "the city" and that "the city" would be working on water pipes in his area. The victim noticed a blue full-size van parked in front of his home occupied by a passenger. The suspect told him he needed access to the backyard to take measurements. The suspect kept the victim occupied for approximately 20 minutes in the backyard. When the suspect finished, he walked out the side yard and left in the van s/b on Shasta Wy.
The victim went back into his house and noticed cash and jewelry were stolen from a closet in his house. It appears the passenger most likely went into the house and stole the items while the victim was distracted in the backyard. The victim said he did not see any City of Hemet logo's on the suspects clothing or on the vehicle parked outside. The victim did not check the man's identification.
The following is the description of the suspects’ and vehicle that was provided to police:
Suspect #1: White male adult, mid 20's, 5-08, 180, wearing a white T-Shirt and blue pants.
Suspect #2 (passenger): Unknown, victim did not see the passenger well.
Vehicle: Full size blue van.
The Hemet Police Department reminds all residents to not allow strangers in your backyard or into your home without verifying their identity. Ask to see their identification. If you are approached by strangers in this manner or observe suspicious activity in your neighborhood, call the police immediately. |
